Have you ever felt like you’d died and gone to heaven? I have. One morning many years ago, I found myself in a mango grove in the Alagar Hills at Madurai. The tree canopy was so thick that it prevented much of the light from coming through, leaving my eyes wide as I gazed at hundreds of neelam mangos hanging low, glistening invitingly. Slice it, cube it, and pop it in; scoop out the flesh of a rumani with your teeth; take a senthoram and suck the juice from the top by biting off a tiny portion; slice an neelam and chew on it with your eyes closed… wait, I’m going to take a break from writing because my table’s malgova beckons.

Comparing it to any other fruit is like comparing Rajinikanth to Mohan or Sarath Babu. I mean, doesn’t everyone know there can only be one Superstar?

An ode to banana

It’s nice to enjoy a little holiday romance now and then. But, as the old saying goes, “everybody needs a friend who is there for them through the toughest times.” And banana is that someone for me.

All year, I may count on the helpful yellow fruit. Unlike mango, which requires 10 months to ripen like the protagonist of a tragedy awaiting the return of a loved one who subsequently causes heartbreak. Or in my case, indigestion.

The banana is as versatile as Shah Rukh Khan; it’ll fit in just about any scenario. The banana is the Rahul Dravid of fruits: dependable and reliable. You will never be hungry with it by your side. It will see you through all stomach problems, including indigestion. There are no seeds to clean up, no mess to make , or bother. Hands get dirty? That’s fine . Simply peel and consume the fruit .
